Cardinal Timothy Dolan
New York Archbishop Emeritus
Cardinal Timothy Dolan is a proud St. Louis native, raised in Ballwin.
He attended Holy Infant Elementary School, St. Louis Preparatory Seminary South, the now Kenrick-Glennon Seminary, and the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome before being ordained a priest in 1976.
He later earned a doctorate in American Church history from the Catholic University of America. Dolan served for seven years as the Rector of the Pontifical North American College in Rome, where he had lived during his years as a seminarian.
He returned to the Archdiocese of St. Louis, and he was named auxiliary bishop of this Archdiocese in 2001. He was then appointed Archbishop of Milwaukee in 2002, where he served for seven years before Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Archbishop of New York in 2009.
In 2012, he was elevated to the College of Cardinals. After 17 years of leading one of the most influential archdioceses in the country, he retired as Archbishop of New York in 2025.
Known for his warmth, wit, and unwavering conviction, Cardinal Dolan remains a prominent voice for religious liberty, Catholic education, and the dignity of every human life.
In 2026, he was named Co-Chief Chaplain of the New York City Police Department. He is also the author of eight books, including To Whom Shall We Go? and Doers of the Word.
“To return home to St. Louis for any reason is a joy for me.
To come back as part of the Mater Media Speaker Series is especially tantalizing. I hope to see you there.”
